The Music Mama Mantra

Why, exactly...?

Because we do not espouse the notion that having given birth means that we have aurally surrendered to Barney. Because we don't care what the Wheels on the Bus do. Because we can still rock.

And because, even in the midst of the lives, families and posts that we love...sometimes we still need to put on our headphones and jam out with our girlfriends. C'mon. Join the Party.

(But, if you're looking for Kids' Music - our kids have you covered. Go check our other blog here: The Music Minis.)

  1. Dr. Pants, with music on the Jersey Shore! THRICE!

I have some very exciting news! First of all, my friend David has a band. Named Dr. Pants. But even more exciting than that – two, count ‘em, TWO songs by Dr. Pants were featured on the smash hit MTV show Jersey Shore last week.

And while I must admit I have never, ever (even once) seen an episode of Jersey Shore, I still found this news to be incredibly exciting. Like I said above. VERY VERY exciting.

  2. You Tube For Music!

I am a HUGE fan of Blip.fm! If there’s a certain song I want to listen to, I go and search, find my specific flavor of the moment, and enjoy the music in my ears. Sometimes, though, something else pops up. Something I wasn’t expecting. Something totally delicious on a different level.

  3. Rockin’ Mama Rain Perry turns up the heat on Internal Combustion

Southern California native and indie singer/songwriter Rain Perry is perhaps best known for her ode to the atypical family, “Beautiful Tree”. Featured on her 2008 album Cinderblock Bookshelves, this song is more commonly known as the theme for The CW’s quirky hit family drama, Life Unexpected.

  4. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

I first heard Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings on a late night talk show. I’ve since forgotten which show but I haven’t forgotten this band. I love me some old school and I love it when a modern singer brings that soulful, old school vibe. I love a woman who can bring the noise, and Ms. Jones sure does. She’s got the voice, along with some of the other ladies of this torch song genre (such as Amy Winehouse, Duffy or Adele – whom I also adore), but Ms. Jones also brings the wisdom of a full grown woman.

  7. “Ready, ready, ready, ready….to RUN!”

I take out of the house; Nike’s laced up, hair pulled back, iPod affixed on my arm,  my ear-buds in.   Off I go, hitting the pavement, digging deep to go farther each time, and to reach my goal.   I am a new runner, but an old lover of music.   I know the power of the beat so I use it to my advantage.

  9. Please allow me to introduce myself …

Hey! New Music Mama Mari here, and by way of introduction, I give you the 9 albums that made me the hot mess that I am today. This was taken in part from a post I wrote a few years back but has since been updated. In order, chronologically, by the year I was rocked by them:

  10. Dann Singe Ich Ein Lied Für Dich

I just returned from a fabulous, week-long family vacation in Germany. I have a “thing” for Germany; if you search my personal blog for “foreign fetish” you can read all about it, but I digress. For me, music in Germany has always been very powerful. Let me explain.
