The Day I Met Kelly Clarkson

Last December I got a call to do some awesome work.  I’d be heading down to New Orleans with the Tide Loads of Hope campaign with two of my favorite bloggers, Velveteen Mind and Deb on the Rocks.  We were there to listen to and re-tell stories of hope from people that were still feeling the effects of Hurricane Katrina.  Tide was giving the gift of clean bushels of laundry, but it was much more than that.  We were there to witness it and tell the Blogosphere and Twitterverse all about it.

Tide Loads of HopeKelly Clarkson was there, too.   She was there to help out and while she was there she shared with us her humble beginnings.   She shared how their family was often in need, when she was growing up, and she was doing her part to give back.

She was down to earth and so willing to help out.  She worked for a great while; she switched out loads, pulled out dry clothes, folded, and bagged them up for pick-up.  It was great to witness!

Here are a few – I was the gopher for Tori Amos’ chef at one of her shows. He made the most amazing food out of a mobile kitchen and was mad that Jackson, MS didn’t have Ben & Jerry’s ice cream yet.

Sam Phillips opened for Counting Crows, also in Jxn, and only played like 3 songs because the sound sucked and the crowd was rude. So we went out to her bus instead of staying for CC – she didn’t come out right away, but her hubby, T-Bone Burnett did. We talked for awhile, I shared my Jelly Bellys with her, and then they played for us in the parking lot. WAY cool.

There are some others, like the really disgusting house that Blind Melon lived in during their Chapel Hill stint (those boys needed a maid, big time), and the time I offended Zack Wilde by passing on a photo op with him because I could smell him from 10 feet away. But really, meeting the boys of rock is usually anti-climatic because they usually need a stiff cup of coffee and a dozen showers.

I really would love to meet Buddy and Julie Miller and Emmylou Harris one day. That would be awesome.

Great question, Mishi! I love hearing people’s stories like these.

How amazing to meet a down-to-earth celebrity!

I’ve met a few, and have been pretty lucky. Some were wonderful, and others were just kind of “there”. But no one has ever been rude or ugly.

I’ve met a few you’ve probably heard of, but most you probably HAVEN’T: Saliva, Chris Perez Band, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, North Mississippi Allstars, Cruxshadows, Seraphim Shock, Voltaire, Twin Method, Satyricon, Septic Flesh, Hank III, Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights.

    I think that’s all!

I met lots of celebs over the years that I worked PR for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Most of the musicians were country artists though: Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Randy Owen (from Alabama), Martina McBride, Amy Grant & Vince Gill. That short guy Renee Zellweger married for a minute. Brad Paisley. So many over the years. All were extraordinarily nice. But the one that really impressed me was Travis Tritt. I did a video interview with him & I’ll be he has a genius IQ. His smarts blew me away.
