I first heard Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings on a late night talk show. I’ve since forgotten which show but I haven’t forgotten this band. I love me some old school and I love it when a modern singer brings that soulful, old school vibe. I love a woman who can bring the noise, and Ms. Jones sure does. She’s got the voice, along with some of the other ladies of this torch song genre (such as Amy Winehouse, Duffy or Adele – whom I also adore), but Ms. Jones also brings the wisdom of a full grown woman.
This CD is awesome for some old-school chilling on the patio with a few drinks and your girls or your sweetheart. Spontaneous dancing may ensue; be warned.
The band has been around for nearly 10 years, and this, their 4th studio album, was recorded on an old 8-track machine (according to their website), and that lends each track a lushness and legitimacy that will make you question whether this is truly a 21st Century offering, but rest assured that it is.
If you haven’t already discovered them, I urge you to check them out now.

Talk about the real deal – SJ&tDK is IT! Great post, Mari!
I love Sharon and the Dap Kings. A friend turned me on to them this spring and they have been on heavy rotation ever since. If you like Sharon take a listen to Caro Emerald’s album Scenes Deleted on the Cutting Room Floor. She is swing where Sharon is soul but both have amazing horn sections.
