Will We Get A New Outrageous Moment At This Year’s MTV VMAs?

The MTV Video Music Awards, or “VMAs” as they have been called lately because people can’t help but abbreviate nearly everything in this world, are always a load of fun to watch, but not only because of the music and the videos, though those elements are great. Rather, I enjoy being on the lookout for potential explosions and trainwrecks.

Believe me, you never know what little piece of friction–sometimes planned, sometimes not–might end up creating an outrageous, surprising, shocking, impressive, or downright indescribable moment (or two) that people all over the world will be talking about for weeks. Last year, it was the Kanye West/Taylor Swift fiasco. If you missed it (how the heck did that happen?), fill yourself in by clicking here. (My stomach still drops in horror when I watch, even after seeing it about twenty-five times.)

It sorta made everybody forget about the Britney Spears fiasco of 2007. But I’ll get to that in a minute.

The first notable outrageous moment at the VMAs happened at the very first ceremony, back in 1984. A relatively new artist by the name of Madonna put on an unforgettable performance of “Like A Virgin” while wearing a white wedding dress (ish) and writhing around on the stage. The crowd loved it, and it was a peek into Madonna’s own style of “shock and awe”.

In 1989, comic Andrew Dice Clay got himself a lifetime ban from the VMAs for his vulgar (especially for 1989!) nursery rhyme routine (If you’re at work or in the presence of young ones, I wouldn’t click play. Just sayin’.).

What’s wrong with a man kissing his wife? Well, nothing, but if the couple in question is (the late) Michael Jackson and wife Lisa Marie Presley and they’re kissing on a live television broadcast (especially in a super-awkward way), it makes news. That’s what happened at the 1994 VMAs, anyway.

In 1995, one of the memorable moments happened even before the show went on-air. Kurt Loder was interviewing Madonna on the red carpet, and Courtney Love completely hijacked the conversation. When Courtney threw something at Madonna, the conversation went like this:

Kurt: Should we let her come up? (very excitedly)
Madonna:SHOULD we let her come up? (a little fearfully)
Kurt: YEAH!!!!
Madonna: No, let’s don’t.

And then, in a total idiot move which he probably still regrets today considering who ended up being/remaining the bigger star, Kurt sided with Courtney rather than Madonna and let her come up.

In 1997, Best New Artist Fiona Apple caused some waves with the attitude of her acceptance speech, telling people to “go with yourself” rather than following or emulating “celebrity culture”. (By the way, her song “Criminal”? ROCKS. In my opinion anyway.)

In 1999, Lil Kim seemed to get the thrill of her life when Diana Ross copped a feel.

In 2000, Britney Spears, who was clearly at the top of her game as a performer back then, made a huge splash performing “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Oops, I Did It Again” in a nude-colored outfit, erasing her previously squeaky-clean image in the minds of the viewing public forever. Oops, indeed.

How do you top that? With a snake, as she did the following year.

In 2003, Madonna kissed Britney (and Christina Aguilera) during a mashup of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood”, and I think just about everybody in the world has forgotten that Missy Elliott came on stage for the last minute.

In 2006, OK GO did their choreographed treadmill routine to their hit “Here It Goes Again” (just like in their video). It was mesmerizing to watch, and totally incredible that they pulled it off.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to get back to the Britney fiasco of 2007. (Britney got excited about that for a second.) After a hellacious year which included shaving her head, checking in (and out) (and in) to rehab, attacking the paparazzi with an umbrella, behaving weirdly (to be kind) during a magazine photo shoot, and countless other dramas that played out in front of the world, Britney opened the VMAs with her song “Gimme More”. Oddly enough, her performance left the stunned audience thinking the exact same thing. It’s a sad sight, but you know what’s even more sad? Watch the videos (above) from 2000 and 2001 and then this one. Now THAT’S sad.

It’ll be interesting to see if Kanye, who is coming back this year as a performer, can keep his butt in his seat before and after his number. If he does, don’t worry. There’s bound to be some other outstanding moment (or two or three) that you can discuss around the water cooler. (Any predictions on who’ll stir the pot?)

By the way, if you haven’t ever tuned in, mark your calendar for THIS Sunday, September 12. The VMAs are on (for the first time this year) at 9:00 p.m. Eastern/8:00 p.m. Central. Even though MTV will replay the ceremony more times than you could possibly imagine, I recommend that you watch it live to avoid the inevitable editing that has to happen for the repeats.

Oh, and one more thing: I’m not the only Music Mama who decided to write a post about the VMAs. Check our front page for more!

I think the Madonna/Courtney moment was my favorite “moment.” Shortly after last year’s Kanye/Taylor fiasco I became (and still am) convinced that the three of them planned it all for publicity! (And if so? Well played.)

Too much Madonna for my taste. I’d chose ANYONE over Madonna ANYTIME. Haha You hear that Kurt?

Seriously there’s three celebs that get my blood boiling. Here they are, in no particular order. Madonna, Lady Gaga and Naomi Campbell.

Great post though. Can’t wait to see what the next VMAs have in store.

Kim: Hmm, I can’t imagine that. I CAN imagine that Kanye did it for his own publicity; I can’t imagine that Taylor Swift would’ve gone along with that at all. My jury is still out on Beyonce, but she sure did come out smelling like a rose at the end…

Kat: Thanks. I can’t stand Naomi Campbell either. Hateful.

Mari: I’m right there with ya!

    Patty: Thanks!! :)

I have been browsing online more than 3 hours lately, but I by no means discovered any fascinating article like yours. It is pretty price enough for me. In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the internet shall be much more useful than ever before.
