Cage the Elephant Restores My Hope for Rock

Have you heard Cage the Elephant yet? If not, then run…don’t walk to your nearest computer and buy their self-titled debut album. Packed with 11 rockin’ tunes that have as many different sounds as they do names, Cage the Elephant captured my interest quickly and held it the entire album. Raised in Bowling Green, the boys of Cage the Elephant show us that Fruit of the Loom, bourbon, and horse racing are not the only things to come out of Kentucky, just the coolest. As a native of Kentucky myself, I am always interested the music coming out of the Blue Grass State and am generally disappointed. Not this time.

The album starts with “In One Ear” the band’s grunge rock, finger-flippin answer to all the nay-sayers back in Bowling Green who told them they would never make it (look who was wrong) and just keeps coming. In “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked”, CTE goes deeper in to society with a look at the real world and the struggle just to survive. The last song on the album, “Free Love” has an almost throw-back 60′s rock sound reminiscent of Hendrix with lyrics that are easy to remember and hard to get out of your head. I love “Back Against the Wall” with it’s garage-band rock sound and trippy video, it keeps me coming back for more. To me, their sound is something like The White Stripes meet grunge rock with their ever changing tempo and storytelling lyrics.

My favorite song on the album? Well, that’s a hard one. I can honestly say I have listened to every song more than once. But right now, my personal anthem is “In One Ear”. I can relate to the lyrics and the sentiment displayed throughout the entire song. You can only take so much before you tell those people where to shove it.

The band members: Matt Shultz on vocals, Brad Shultz on guitar, Jared Champion on drums and percussion, Daniel Tichenor on bass and extra vocals, and Lincoln Parish on lead guitar give me hope for rock in an age when it seems like everyone sounds the same and is content just play what the masses of tweens are screaming for. Since they’re playing in Bowling Green in early October, I’m hoping to make it out to get my Cage the Elephant fix in person.

Love them, love this and totally agree 100%!

(Although I’m partial to “Drones in the Valley”, but more for the music than the lyrics. They nail it with the lyrics to “In One Ear”.)

Yes! “Drones in the Valley” has some really awesome music to it. But yeah, as childish as it may be, “In One Ear” pretty much still sums up how I live my life. Heh.

I’m interested to see where they go with their next album and if we’re still as pleased then.

I must be the only person on the face of the planet who does not adore Cage The Elephant. But I guess I should at least try to listen to some of their stuff that *isn’t* overplayed, like “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked”.
