Rolling Stone writer Rob Sheffield captures what it’s like to love through music in Love Is a Mix Tape. It’s one of my top 3 favorite music books. If you love music, it’s a must-read, for wisdom like this:
“When you stick a song on a tape, you set it free.”
We all have mix tapes … tapes that remind us of that first love, tapes for getting over the same, tapes for studying, tapes for cleaning, tapes for working out, tapes that take us back to a particular moment in time. That’s what Sheffield does with this book. He plays back moments in his life for the whole world to see.
Each chapter starts with the name of a playlist, then lists the songs. It’s a goldmine of
I read Love Is a Mix Tape with a highlighter in one hand and my iPhone next to me. Every time I ran across a song I didn’t know, like Love (Makes Me Do Foolish Things) by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, I searched on iTunes or Google until I found it. If I liked it, I downloaded it.
The book is a glorious ode to life and love and how music really is the soundtrack to both. Sheffield lets us in and tells us all about his wife Renee and how music became the foundation of their love. And how it sustained them through the tough times. And how it changed when he lost her. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll sing. Then you’ll want to make your own mix tape.
Go pick up a copy of Love Is a Mix Tape. It rocks.
What’s on your favorite mix tape?
Here’s what I’m playing right now.
I did my review of this book last year, here: http://drawntotheflame.blogspot.com/2009/02/february-book.html
It is one of my very favorite books. I expected to like it and came away LOVING it. It was amazing and he gained a giant fan in me after that…

Love it! Going to check this one out, thanks for the tip! Also love the playlist … Sing Me Back Home is one of my all-time most very favorite songs in the ever. Period. Love that you have it here!

Thanks, y’all!
I’m reading his second one, Talking to Girls about Duran Duran, right now, but it’s not as good.
My playlist is/was so random right now, it’s nuts. Sad songs, happy songs, pissy songs … and if I could’ve found Cee-Lo’s new ditty, it definitely would’ve made the list.
Love and rock!
