TMI: Mari’s Ultimate Mix side 1

Becky and Mari: wanted for crimes against hair and general havoc-wreaking

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there were two young girls named Mari (that would be me, pictured on the right) and Becky (my partner in crime, pictured on the left) who wreaked havoc upon the southeastern portion of Wisconsin. With their teased hair and crystals-on-leather-cord necklaces, they fancied themselves new-age hippies. Their nights were spent working the midnight shift at a local factory. Their days were spent sleeping and driving around, pushing the envelope and listening to their mix tapes.

This is side one of their ultimate mix tape, created with care and recorded one by one on a 120 minute tape using songs from CDs and tape.

The Ultimate Mix tape (circa 1990): side 1

1.       Sweet Cherry Wine (Tommy James & the Shondells)

2.       A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall (Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians)
This song was featured in “Born on the Fourth of July” and I just loved her vibe

3.       Wild World (Cat Stevens)

4.       No Sugar Tonight (The Guess Who)
Deep cut, awesome tune

5.       Piece of My Heart (Janis Joplin)
Every hippie chick needs to know her Janis

6.       Stir it Up (Bob Marley)
I dated a reggae-loving cutie pie, and this song was one of my faves

7.       Cecelia (Simon & Garfunkel)
Still makes me dance

8.       I Got You Babe (Sonny & Cher)

9.       Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)
Sonic perfection

10.   Heaven Can Wait (Meatloaf)
Don’t be dissin’ the ‘loaf; I’ve seen this dude live more times than I can remember. The most memorable show was an outdoor festival in the fall … he was sweating so much and putting on such a show that there was steam rising from him (bat out of hell, indeed)

11.   Never Been Any Reason (Head East)

12.   Slow Ride (Foghat)

13.   Mercedes Benz (Janis Joplin)

14.   Some Kind of Wonderful (Grand Funk Railroad)
I think it’s funny that we put this “I don’t need a whole lots of money / I don’t need a big fine car” song right after the “Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz”

15.   Ah! Leah! (Donny Iris)

16.   Drift Away (Dobie Gray)

Side 2? Yeah, you’ll have to wait for that one.

What a great mix tape! I’ve always loved The Guess Who, and I still love Simon & Garfunkel. “Loves Me Like a Rock” and “The Boxer”…ahhhh…great songs!
