Cake: Showroom of Compassion

How did this happen?

I bought Cake’s CD Showroom of Compassion in January and meant to write about it … but here it is now mid-May and I’m just getting to it. I’ve listened to it a few times since I bought it but it really hit home with me today, on a day when nothing else could.

Some music you need to simmer in before you make up your mind about it. For me, this is just such a collection of tunes. But what an awesome collection it is.

Showroom of Compassion is smart and a little sardonic, just like the Cake you may already know and love. But this has more of a moody, country effect. If you like the stylistic mash up that Cake provides, you won’t be disappointed; this provides the horns, the harmonies, the new wave spin but the bluesy feel and touches of country make it something entirely new.

My favorite songs (right now) are “Federal Funding” and “Sick of You” but I know that will change the more I listen to it. There isn’t a fast-forward begging title in the bunch.

Visit to learn more about the band or hear samples from the new (and old) slices of Cake.
