…and THAT is how you abuse catgut.

Pre-release CD Review:  2Cellos

Confession:  I have a strong, natural affinity for stringed instruments played with bows by attractive men.

Oh, sure – I love guitars, banjos, ukuleles and the occasional upright bass…but give me a passionate Seth Lakeman or Johnny Flynn performance on the violin and I’m total mush.

Well, move over Seth and Johnny.  Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser have blown you right off your thrones.

(Go ahead…have a cigarette and a Diet Coke if necessary. I’ll wait.)

These two musical dynamos hail from Croatia, and at the tender age of 24 have taken both the worlds of classical and popular music and flipped them on their collective asses.  Billing themselves as “2Cellos“, Sulic and Hauser became self-made overnight sensations when they uploaded a video performance f themselves doing their own inimitable arrangement of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” and set YouTube on fire with more than 6,000,000 views in three months…and counting.  Gotta love that kind of hutzpah!

Devastating looks and phenomenal talent aside, I have other reason to love these guys.  As the mother of a music loving child, I am thrilled to be able to show my five year old, Liam, that it is PASSION for what you do – not necessarily the “cool factor” of your choice – makes all the difference.  Let’s think:  Luka and Stejpan likely took up their cello lessons as children, right?

I imagine that lugging instruments in cases bigger than they were back and forth to lessons did not immediately label either of them as *stud* on the playground.

I also imagine that they did not immediately start playing popular music during these early lessons – a theory which has proven to be true when one scans YouTube for videos of their OTHER performances – together and individually.  These gentlemen are accomplished classical musicians, who have obviously mastered their instruments through years of dedicated study and practice “the old fashioned way.”  They are living embodiments of the lesson of perseverance and discipline – that with a solid foundation in the education and understanding of your chosen field, you can then build, create and invent anything that you can conceive beyond that.

Abbreviated version:  they did the work, took no shortcuts…and now they can do whatever they want.

These are the kind of role models I want for my son, who is currently listening to the above video for the tenth time straight, absolutely mesmerized.  Well done, 2Cellos – well done, indeed!

2Cellos‘ self titled album will be released on July 19th, and a pre-order will get you an immediate dowload of “Smooth Criminal”.  I’ve received an advance copy for review, and I can tell you that it is phenomenal and a MUST purchase, featuring covers of Sting, Muse, Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Kings of Leon…have I got your attention yet?

They’re embarking on a month long European Tour this summer in support of the one and only Sir Elton John, and will finish up in London at the iTunes Festival on July 25th. If you’re anywhere near where they’ll be – GO!

I’ve been graciously offered an interview, and if there’s any way to swing that in the midst of their touring, I’m on it!  I might be able to wrangle a few copies of the CD for giveaway, too, so stay tuned for more on these boys…and in the meantime, tell me what YOU think!

xoxo, Ri

    Freaking love that, Ri!!! Thanks!

I had my son watch with me. He said “I think these dudes have another video of some other song.” (the Michael Jackson one) Apparently his strings teacher at school likes to inspire kids through amazing examples.

    Come on July 19th!

Seriously, pook – their cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is hauntingly beautiful, and I’m pretty sure this is the ONLY way I’ll ever say “I love a Coldplay song” – in reference to their arrangement of “Viva la Vida”!

I’m more of a stand up bass kind of girl, but these guys make the cello pretty freakin’ awesome.
    Welcome to the Jungle, indeed.
