Do you know why? Because Wanda Jackson says so. And she’s got Jack White to back her up.
You may know also her as the Queen of Rockabilly. One of Elvis Presley’s former flames. And an all-around awesome hardcore singer. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 as an early influence, and has a new album out that was produced by Jack White.
You may recall the Jack White / Loretta Lynn collaboration of 2004, “Van Lear Rose.” Where in that release was able to spin out every gossamer bit of Lynn’s sugary sweetness, here he grinds out the gritty, spicy style of Jackson in songs that showcase the voice that earned her the title “The Queen of Rockabilly” when she burst onto the scene in the 1950s.
The CD is a collection of covers both new and old, including songs originally by Amy Winehouse (“You Know I’m No Good,” my personal favorite Winehouse song & the track that led me to this CD) and Bob Dylan (“Thunder on the Mountain,” which Dylan himself suggested Jackson sing).
Any fan of women in rock or rockabilly needs this disc in their collection. Find it where ever awesome music is sold.
