Who Doesn’t Like Cake?

Here you go; the big reveal on your Friday Fiver.

Track one: Shake the Shackles by Crystal Slits

Found this song on a free download, and I’ll not argue the “noise pop” call. Love the guitars & drums; eh on the vocals. Reminds me of Psychedelic Furs a bit. The music really drew me in, but as Ri put it, that “Jim Morrison in a cave” aesthetic is not my cup of coffee.

Track two: Conveyor by Dead Beats

Free song download. I tell you, those are a real mixed bag, kind of like a box of chocolates in that you never know what you’re gonna get. Again, it was the guitars that drew me in, that rhythm had a repetitive, familiar sound that I could not place. For what it’s worth? You can access a bunch of free downloads on their website. But I don’t know that any of you liked this one! This was not my favorite but it was interesting enough that I’m game to hear some more and see if there’s something I like.

Track three: Numbered Days by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Ri, there’s a good reason that this sounds like that “Knock on Wood” band. It is indeed them. Love this CD but have to admit that the other Bosstones releases I heard were a bit too harsh for me. Saw these guys in concert in the early 90s (HFStival in DC) and fell in love with them; talked to a guy at the record store down the street from my office and he recommended a few earlier releases, but they just didn’t have the same vibe as this one.

And I mean really, Kathryn called it, what could be better than a random dancing guy?

Track four: Good Lord Wasn’t Talking To You by The Dirty Commies

I first saw these guys perform live. On a street corner in an arts district. A great big group of stinky hippie-types, busking on the corner for money, complete with dog sleeping next to their tip jar and home-made instruments (including washtub bass and spoons). They’d alternate playing different instruments and singers, some of them sitting some out for certain songs, bringing others in. Then I noticed they had CDs for sale. I Googled them when I got home and found a website and song downloads. The Dirty Commies are a full-on ragtime jug band out of Oregon who play music festivals across the country, busking on corners in between. And if you get a chance to see them, I highly recommend that you do; those kids play the crap out of the washtub bass, washboard and spoons (not to mention the Dobro, banjo and ukelele).

Track five:Huge Misunderstanding by Cake

Huge misunderstanding indeed! I grabbed the instrumental “bonus track” from their latest CD release but grabbed the wrong track. It was universally reviled by all who played the Fiver this week. Oh well! I stand by it. It captures the feel of the Showroom of Compassion CD, with a bit of Latin flair. Plus, I’ve been watching Dexter on Showtime and this is like good background music for that show.
