Here goes nothin’ …

Track 1: Against Me, New Wave

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Against Me! is a Florida punk band that’s been around for a while but never has seemed to gain traction. I can’t remember where I heard of them. This is from their 2007 release of the same name, and I am enamored of every song on this CD. I love their propensity to use unexpected lyrics; they make me smile. The band is still active, released a new CD in June and recently began their own label.

Track 2: Merle Haggard, Wouldn’t That Be Something

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Merle Haggard’s voice to me is a soothing comfort, takes me back to being a kid, safe in my parents home and safe in my naivete about the world. If that’s wrong? Well, I don’t wanna be right. Merle tries his hand at bluegrass and it’s alright by me!

Track 3: Nirvana, Aneurysm

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Yup, Nirvana. Because sometimes, nothing else will do. Kurt Cobain’s raw voice in this song combined with the epic power of Novoselic & Grohl; made of win. Sad, sad win. This is a live track (obviously) off a slightly lesser-known release.

Track 4: The Clash, Wrong ‘Em, Boyo

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The only band that matters (if you believe their press & fans). This is a bouncy beat that makes me want to dance. Kathryn thought it sounded like a wedding band, and if it is, then it’s the wedding of kick ass & awesome, and I want to go to there!

Track 5: The Plimsouls, A Million Miles Away

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Had to include this one after watching Valley Girl and re falling in love with this song and that movie. Great song, so incredibly 80s and so incredibly teen angsty.

Thanks for playing!

I said they were a DRUNK wedding band, so obviously the clash at a wedding = drunk lead singer. So I was totally right (not on purpose). This song was so chill for them, never thought it was actually the clash.
Also, didn’t think I nailed the Nirvana one either because I had never heard that little diddy and I thought I had heard them all.
I ruined the fiver for everyone – nice.

And what betetr way to elicit comments than to write about commenting! Quick question. Sometimes I find I am writing a loooong comment in response. So I abandon the comment and write a blog post instead linking back to the original. In your opinion, do you like that betetr? Or would you rather (hypothetically speaking) I leave a short comment anyways, along with the blog post?

Greek philosophers and medieval theorists described music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies, and as harmonies vertically. Music theory, within this realm, is studied with the pre-supposition that music is orderly and often pleasant to hear. However, in the 20th century, composers challenged the idea that music needed to be enjoyable by creating music that explored harsher, darker timbres. The living of some modern-day time genres such as grindcore and noise music, which enjoy an extensive underground following, indicate that even the crudest sounds can be considered music if the listener is so inclined.20th century composer John Cage disagreed with the idea that music must consist of pleasant, discernible melodies, and he challenged the notion that it can communicate anything. Instead, he argued that any sounds we can hear can be music, saying, for instance, “There is no noise, only sound.According to musicologist Jean-Jacques Nattiez.”The border between music and noise is often culturally defined–which means that, even within an individual society, this border will not pass through the same place always; in short, there exists a consensus rarely…. By all accounts there is absolutely no single and intercultural common idea defining what music might be.
