I am a proud child of the ’80′s. I was weaned on John Hughes films and indie rock. I remember Walkmen, the original “V-Jays” and how to make big hair. I loved The Smiths.
Scratch that, I still LOVE The Smiths.
Recently, a tribute album was released. You can find it on iTunes HERE. Please, Please, Please – A Tribute to the Smiths started me searching for other covers of their songs. Musicians love The Smiths so I had lots of choices. Below are four versions of Please, Please, Please Let me Get What I Want for your perusal:
The Original by The Smiths
She & Him
William Fitzsimmons
Muse
So listeners, what do you think? Are you still in love with the original or open to some new versions? Personally, nothing will top The Smith’s original version for me, but I still own most of these covers as well. A girl can never have too many options.
Okay, starting from the bottom:
Muse annoy me…ALMOST as much as Helen Hunt. Per usual, their spin on the first few lines of their cover proclaimed their pretentious twattishness, and I turned it off.
William Fitszimmons: Meh.
She and Him: LOVE M.Ward’s arrangement…and though Zooey has a very nice voice…just, no.
Which leaves the original – still #1 in my book!
I happen to adore Muse
I’m not a fan of She & Him. Zooey’s voice bugs me. I do think she’s cute and I like her quirky way.
W. Fitzsimmons… nice
The Smith’s are amazing and can’t really be topped, but then again I think the fact I’m an 80′s child myself probably sways my opinion a bit.
Great post, Kathryn!
Zooey D’s ubiquitousness has reserved her a spot on my last nerve….though I used to kind of dig She & Him.
My 15 year old self is appalled that anyone thinks they can sing this half as well as Morrissey.
