Sunday Scoop: Friday Six Pack Revealed

The Fiver is all gone … all that’s left is the scoop!

Yay! Thanks for playing. I do so love a Friday Fiver. Find some songs you never heard before, rediscover some you had forgotten about, learn about musical places you NEVER WANT TO VISIT AGAIN! Yep, that’s what it’s all about.

Now, without further ado …

Track 1: Now We Can See (The Thermals)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

For-free from Amazon.com, off the Kill Rock Stars 20-year Anniversary sampler. After I downloaded this, I listened to the Letter T episode from the Never Not Funny Rock Solid podcast (I so want to be their snarky, female third host) and they name-checked The Thermals and I ended up buying the disc (titled Now We Can See). Half of it is fun-fueled upbeat alt-pop & the other half is mellow moody pop. I prefer the first half.

Track 2: Settle Down (No Doubt)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Yes. New No Doubt. I am a fan of the band, from way back in the messy ska days when they were rocking the Tragic Kingdom (with the awful Spiderwebs song that is about technology; hate songs that are about tecnology. Hello, REM’s “Star 69″ and Beyonce’s “Videophone”; why you gotta go there?). It’s a total pet peeve). But I digress; this song is totally addictive. Looking forward to the impending album drop.

Track 3: The Road Song (Radio Milan)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Another free song from Amazon, from the Musica La Dolce CD. If you know me, you know I love a messy guitar. This one is straight out of 80s new-wave pop. I would expect to hear this song over a John Hughes montage, like when Ferris is driving through town or Randy and Julie are, like, totally cruising on Sunset Strip while her friends are like all hanging in the Valley? Oh crap. Now I gotta go watch Valley Girl. #firstworldproblems

Track 4: Generals (The Mynabirds)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I. Love. This. Song. Why? Hell if I know. It sticks to my ribs. Funky fresh meets old-school Motown. Plus that heavy drumline makes me swoony. Reminds me of a cross between Tilly & the Wall and Sleigh Bells. Which is an awesome thing, to be clear. Scored this one for FREE on Amazon, from the Summer 2012 Saddle Creek Sampler.

Track 5: My Ma (Girls)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Meh. This one is not my favorite, but I played it for variety. It was free, again, many thanks to Amazon! Matador Intended Play 2012 sampler CD. Seriously people, if you’re not downloading all of this free music from Amazon, why aren’t you? And no, they are not paying me to ask you that. I’m just all about some legal free tunes.

Track 6: Ruby Soho (Rancid)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

What? Were you talking to me? I’m sorry, I was moshing.I have a deep and abiding love for all things Tim Armstrong and/or Rancid.

Thanks for playing!

I play Golf as much as I can. Unfortunately, I don’t make as much time as I did back in the day. No doubt it’s the same story for a lot of people. – Ortez
