I am, I am, I am Superman; and I can do anything. 'Cause I’ve got it going on like that. I think in pop culture terms and most everything I see or hear reminds me of something I’ve seen or heard before. If I'm having a conversation with you, be assured that it’s being filtered through a song, TV show or movie that is tucked into my gray matter. The last of 7 kids, I was raised in a world between my dad’s Merle Haggard and my brother’s Black Sabbath (with some Bay City Rollers thrown in for good measure). My first mix tapes were made sitting on the front porch with a transistor radio and a tape recorder; I've since moved on to CDs and playlists. I spent a lot of quality time as a kid with a stash of old 45s (we had a corner of our basement set up to look like our own little WKRP in Cincinnati) and I would lip synch to “Ballroom Blitz” and “Hooked on a Feeling.” I like my music (and I could end the sentence there & be happy) a bit gritty, and I’m happiest when the songs are a bit unpolished. I’ve seen Metallica live 5 times and cried when Van Halen broke up. I’m happily married, the mom of two young kids (8 & 6) and the editor of a local parenting magazine. I like to run, read, listen to music, knit, cook, and kick back with friends for drinks. Then I like to write about all of that stuff (names may be changed to protect the innocent).

On trainwrecks and twerking

So, I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that you either watched the VMAs on Sunday or heard about them Monday and possibly have an opinion. Of course, the runaway performance of the evening was Miley Cyrus. Should we be surprised? I mean, c’mon, this is MTV and the 10th anniversary…

And then a playlist just happened

I was just minding my own business. And then I just kind of started doing the “la la la la la la la la la la-la” that starts “Wild World” and then I’m playing it and then it’s making me think of other songs and then voila! I tripped on a playlist. So here it…

You know, I’m a dreamer

but my heart’s of gold… I had to run away high… so I wouldn’t come home low… What do you think when someone asks you, “who do you think you are?” Because that’s the little ditty that always pops into my head. I just love this question. Who am I? Musically, speaking, I mean. Because…

Great Moments in 80s Pop Songs

What makes the perfect 80s song? Oh, so subjective. But I’ve got my opinions. Let’s start with this one: Greg Kihn: The Breakup Song.

The Sunday Scoop: What was that song?

Thanks for riding the Fiver! Check below for the details of the songs. REM – “Endgame”  One of the filler tunes off Out of Time, it’s like the song with no words, the one that you keep listening to, waiting for the words to start. A sweet interlude with Michael Stipe’s la-la-las and that signature…

Why Fiver?

Because it’s the first Friday of the month. And “First Friday Fiver” has a lovely ring to it. For the uninitiated, here is how the fiver works: listen to the tracks below. Put your thoughts on said tracks in the comments below. Ever wanted to be a music critic? Now’s your chance. Have too much…

This or That: Lady Business

Seriously, this week has been all about lady business. From discussions about Helen Gurley Brown to the Bic for Her pen dustup (I was all thinking that surely that can’t be real. I’ll stop now lest I hijack the purpose of this post.), so why not a This or That focusing on lady business? And…

Sunday Scoop: Friday Six Pack Revealed

The Fiver is all gone … all that’s left is the scoop! Yay! Thanks for playing. I do so love a Friday Fiver. Find some songs you never heard before, rediscover some you had forgotten about, learn about musical places you NEVER WANT TO VISIT AGAIN! Yep, that’s what it’s all about. Now, without further…

And then there were five. Plus a bonus track.

I was gonna say it’s 5 plus 1 because “Friday six pack” doesn’t have as nice a ring to it as Friday Fiver .. but who am I kidding? Everyone loves a six pack. Except when those people like airbrush the six pack onto their abs. But the tattoo of the six pack is kind…

The Scoop

Thanks for playing! Here are the details of the songs, chosen for their recent addition to my music library and front-of-mind awareness in my head! Hope you found something you like.
