This or That: Lady Business

Seriously, this week has been all about lady business. From discussions about Helen Gurley Brown to the Bic for Her pen dustup (I was all thinking that surely that can’t be real. I’ll stop now lest I hijack the purpose of this post.), so why not a This or That focusing on lady business?

And by Lady Business, I mean female singers: P!nk and Gwen Stefani (okay, fine; it’s No Doubt, but she’s still the singer).

Both have put out new songs this summer (which makes me feel old remembering the first time I bought their music on physical media because iTunes wasn’t yet invented) and new albums on the horizon. So which tune will you drop your $1.29 to add to your collection? Or both? Or neither?

So what’s it gonna be?

No Doubt — Settle Down. Album (Push and Shove) due to drop September 25.

Or that:

P!nk — Blow Me (One Last Kiss). Album (The Truth About Love) due to drop September 18.

I love them both but I think P!nk is the favorite by far with these two options. In fact this was the Rock Out in the Family Truckster song with my kids this summer (well, the radio edit version at least). So basically, Blow Me.

I love me some P!nk, while No Doubt I could really do without!

I know I’m not the target demo but I listened to them both and I’d have to say neither. They both sounded (to me) like Pasteurized, Processed Music-like ProductⓇ. The musical equivalents to Betty Crocker canned frosting. I did try but they both made my teeth hurt from the clenching. Also – I think the language in the Pink song is part (albeit a small one) of what’s wrong with our culture. It’s one thing if somebody drops the odd curse word in a meaningful song that’s *about* something (think Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy”) or steps it up in a song that’s not intended to be heard by kids in the first place (NIN’s “Closer” comes to mind, as well as Tupac’s “Hit ‘Em Up) but to have it be part of the actual chorus of a lightweight, throwaway pop song by an artist who, I’d assume, has millions upon millions of young fans, well it just makes the world of music a little bit uglier place. Your mileage may vary.

Thank you for your comments! Kathryn & Colleen, I will gladly trade you the P!nk for the No Doubt–not my favorite. I want to love her because I love her style as an anti-Britney, but some of her songs don’t resonate for me. This was one.

It took me a while to warm up to the No Doubt song, but soon I was hip-swiveling all over the kitchen making breakfast, singing that one. It’s infectious!

Scott–as a person with ears and an opinion, you are totally our demographic! I’m not a lover of pop music (mostly I tolerate it), but I’m excited to hear both of these albums (do they even call them that anymore?)later this month. Oh, and I agree with the comment about the swears; and that’s saying a lot because I have a potty mouth. :)
